This month it was my choice of subject and this is it. A mother Cheetah and her two cubs, probably on the Serengeti.
The initial drawing
Stage 2
20" x 14" Fabriano Artistico Extra White 140lb (300gm) Not
The concentration here was on the three heads with the rest supporting them. Colours used were various shades of yellow, including Raw Sienna and Gold Ochre (W & N PY43). Cerulean and Cobalt Teal Blue (DS PG50) for the blues with Burnt Umber, which was also mixed with Ultramarine Blue for the darks. There is some diluted Viridian in the background. I also introduced Translucent Orange (Schminke PO71) to warm the animals up. The Serengeti is a very hot place.
Brushes used were the Da Vnci Artissimo 44 No 2 plus some Isabey 6228's (4,6,8) and a couple of riggers for the grassy/foliage bits.
Next month Mick chooses the subject which I await with trepidation! Just joking Mick.
I really like the second image, and think these colours are lovely. Is the final painting a good colour rendition, because I feel its all gone a bit too red. If its a fault with the camera/ photo colours, I would like to see the original
ReplyDeleteThanks Yvonne. The colour rendition was my decision. deliberate in other words! My reasons were I didn't wish to copy the photo too closely. I thought it might raise comment but I went for a more adventurous colour approach.
ReplyDeleteActually on reflection I've changed the photo to one that is slightly more accurate in colour terms. Still reddissh but not so pronounced.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice of photo - the sort of thing I like to paint - although I've not yet painted a cheetah! Lovely interpretation too
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting Sharon. Yes, great photo isn't it. I might have another shot, perhaps portrait shape rather than landscape.
ReplyDeleteI was amazed to see how you changed the colour of the cheetahs so successfully. Very pleasant painting Peter. Nice job on the grass too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for comments Ray.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that struck me was the thing others have remarked upon, the colour. I can understand you making the shift away from the cooler rendition in the previous picture. I like your drawing and you've made a great job of the foliage.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mick. The original photo in colour terms is rather dull - no real contrast at all so I went for it. Perhaps I've overdone it but nothing ventured...
